Parents of Oxford Shooter Sentenced to 10-15 Years

Jennifer and James Crumbley , the parents of Oxford High School shooter, Ethan Crumbley, received a sentence of 10-15 years in prison today for the deaths of the four students killed in the shooting: Madisyn Baldwin (17), Tate Myre (16), Justin Shilling (17), and Hana St. Juliana (14).

The pair were each found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in separate trials earlier this year after prosecutors were able to convince the juries that they “could have foreseen the shooting, and either took actions they shouldn’t have, or didn’t act when they could’ve,” according to a report from Click on Detroit .

They will get credit for the 858 days they’ve already served in the case.

This is the first time in the U.S. that parents have been charged and convicted for a mass shooting carried out by their child.

The shooting at Oxford High School was carried out on Nov. 30, 2021, after the couple were called to the school regarding concerning drawings by their son. They refused to take their son home after that meeting, and he later pulled the Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun that his dad purchased for him four days earlier and shot 10 students and a teacher.

Oakland County prosecutors argued that the couple was negligent by “failing to provide proper care when he reported having hallucinations and struggling with his mental health,” according to the report from Click on Detroit, and instead of addressing the schools concern, purchased their son a gun.

Ethan Crumbley (now, 17) pleaded guilty to terrorism and murder charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in late 2023.
