Alaska troller fisherman dies in onboard accident
A fisherman died in an entanglement accident on board a troll vessel on Aug. 19 about 20 miles northwest of Sitka, according to the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Barry L. McKee, age 75, of Sitka, died on the Lisa Jean in onboard machinery below deck while off Kruzof Island, according to an Alaska troopers’ statement.

Jenae Larson’s Playground Opens Just In Time For New School Year
Kim Larson cuts the ribbon while Jenae's previous students wait to go play. Saturday afternoon saw the long anticipated opening of Jenae Larson’s Playground. Planning for the playground has been happening since early 2021, just months after the Beach Road landslide took the lives of David Simmons and Jenae. A graduate of Haines High School, Jenae Larson returned to her hometown to work as the kindergarten teacher at Haines Elementary School at the time of her death. Jenae’s mother, Kim Larson, said her daughter had always wanted a new playground for her students. Kim Larson and other supporters began fundraising for that goal in March 2021.

For the last two years, the Age-Friendly Anchorage team—comprised of AARP Alaska volunteers, community partners and Anchorage community leaders—has been collecting input from the community on ideas for actions that would make Anchorage a more age-friendly place to live. FAIRBANKS - The 2024 Battle of the Boards Cornhole Tournament, brought to you by the Face-Off Club, is set to take place Sunday, August 25, from 2-5 p.m. at Growden Park.
