Peering at the Past – St. Paul Newspaper Features Brownsville “Coldness,” Twice
A roving newspaper reporter from the Twin Cities, Earl Chapin, stopped one night in Caledonia during the summer of 1947. He borrowed from the local newspaper publisher the “History of Houston County,” by Rev. Edward D. Neill, published in 1882. While reading that night, he came upon this item:
Peering at the Past – Water Flows Downhill; Water Flows Uphill
About 1861, at the depth of 40 feet, water flowed into a drilled well and froze, filling it with solid ice to within a few feet of the top. Summer ice was still found in it many decades later. Eventually, the opening filled in naturally. That was the most amazing well in far southeast Houston County, but not the only remarkable one.
Milwaukee Road Enthusiasts Tour Local Depots
When MRHA (Milwaukee Road Historical Association) selected Winona as the site for their annual convention, they had an expert with local routes available to help plan a tour of the depots of Fillmore and Houston County. President of MRHA Jeff Goutcher hails from Preston originally. A tour was planned of depots remaining along the route of the Milwaukee Road.
Mississippi River in La Crosse reaches moderate flood levels
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) - La Crosse, Vernon, and Houston Counties are under warnings due to flooding along the Mississippi River. Impacted areas around La Crosse include Riverside Park and Goose Island Campground. Campground owners say about 60 percent of the campsite is uncampable and they’ve had to deny multiple reservations.
Tessmer Family recognized as Houston County 2024 U of M Farm Family
The David and Sara Tessmer family of Caledonia has been named Houston County’s “2024 Farm Family of the Year” by the University of Minnesota. The Tessmer farm was founded in the 1870s and is a fifth-generation farm. David and Sara are taking over the family farm from David's father, Eugene.
