The Houston Area Chamber of Commerce discussed upcoming events, city annexation and expressed frustrations during a meeting Friday, Aug. 16.

Financials reported at the meeting showed an estimated $8,604.25 in cash on hand. Due to a financial statement from one of the three bank accounts being missing, the financial report was not approved.

    EVENT DISCUSSION

Morgan Patterson, president, spoke on the most recent demolition derby, declaring it a success despite some rowdy behavior. The event generated an approximate $1,800 profit according to Executive Director Kristie Miller, with $11,012 in revenue. Members discussed the need for increased business sponsorships of the event and trophies to make it sustainable.

Discussion then took place over the ATV rodeo that occurred Saturday, Aug. 17. Miller stated that it was meant to keep the community engaged and will take place on the third weekend of every month as weather permits.

Additionally, the board members – consisting of Patterson, Chelsye Scantlin, Kevin Stilley, Shannon Jordan, Kevin McGowen, Kevin Crowley, Aaron Neeley and Rustin Miller – agreed to host a golf tournament next year, tentatively in April.

    CITY ANNEXATION

Board members expressed positive sentiment regarding a recent meeting with city officials on the relationship between the two entities. A lengthy discussion was held concerning potential annexation of the chamber into the city.

Despite making progress on the topic, the potential for a continued lack of fire department presence, the promise of county deputies at events and concerns over city control led to the matter being tabled.

The possibility of increased policing of alcohol in the pits to encourage better behavior was discussed but left unresolved. Alcohol is not currently allowed but members acknowledged that it is present.

    TENSIONS RISE

Tensions came to a head when the conversation shifted to an October derby, which had been scheduled without prior board approval. The new head of operations – Adam Fleming – was also brought on without board approval. Miller, who had spearheaded the organization of the event, defended her actions, stating that she was making a “day-to-day operational” decision and had consulted Rustin Miller and Patterson.

However, several board members, including Shannon Jordan and Chelsye Scantlin, expressed outrage at the lack of communication and transparency. The debate quickly escalated, with accusations of disrespect and poor management being exchanged. As the argument continued to escalate, Miller abruptly resigned, declaring, “You guys find another director, I quit.” Shortly after, the meeting adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 13, where the board will likely confront the fallout from this explosive session.

According to board members, Miller is expected to return in her capacity as executive director. Jordan resigned from the board Monday morning.
