Diamond Tigers wallop Seymour in district semifinals

Hitting and scoring prolifically from the get-go, the Houston High School baseball team routed Seymour 15-0 in a run-rule shortened semifinals game of the Class 3 District 10 Tournament Tuesday at Tiger Field.

Seeded No. 1 in the event’s 5-team field, the host Tigers scored 9 runs in the first inning and 6 in the second to dispatch the fourth-seeded visiting Tigers in only 2 ½ innings.

Houston’s offense batted around in both innings, sending 13 players to the plate in the first inning and 10 in the second. The host Tigers racked up 10 hits in the short outing, with 7 players getting at least 1.

Senior Stone Jackson continued his torrid hitting for Houston, going 2-for-3 with a double, 5 RBIs and a run scored. Senior catcher Aiden Kelly and senior center fielder Sheldon Starr also had multi-hit outings, as Kelly went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, an RBI and 3 runs scored, while Starr went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs.

Junior Shaun Buck pitched for Houston and allowed just 2 hits while striking out 5 and walking none.

Third-seeded Thayer beat No. 2 Willow Springs 2-1 in Tuesday’s other semifinal matchup and will face Houston for the district championship at 4 p.m. Wednesday (May 15).

Seymour reached the semifinals by defeating No. 5 Liberty 4-3 in a play-in game last Saturday.
