Texas County Memorial Hospital recently announced Bonnie Evans, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in the medical-surgical department, is the 2024 Sunflower Award recipient at TCMH.

The Sunflower Award at TCMH is an annual award that recognizes CNAs, emergency department technicians and surgical technicians who demonstrate outstanding service and compassion while exemplifying TCMH’s mission of excellence in a non-nursing role.

TCMH staff members Haley Beavers, med-surg CNA; Liliana Amick, med-surg CNA; Emilee Weaver, med-surg CNA; Tina Gaddis, emergency department tech; Bonnie Evans, med-surg CNA; Alexis Hurst, emergency department tech; Kassie Rogers, med-surg CNA; Payge Huff, Home Health CNA; Jenn Hack, med-surg CNA were all nominated for the Sunflower Award. Each nominee was honored with special recognition.

“All the nominees represent non-nursing staff who are seen as outstanding role models within our community of caregivers,” Courtney Owens, TCMH chief nursing officer, said.

“The Sunflower Award is the highest form of recognition for a non-nursing role at TCMH.”

From the nominees, Bonnie Evans of Houston was selected as the recipient of the Sunflower Award. Evans has worked at TCMH since February 2022.

Bill Bridges, interim chief executive officer at TCMH, presented the award to Evans.

“I am grateful to those who submitted the nominations and acknowledged the exceptional work of our TCMH CNAs and our emergency room technicians who went the extra mile,” Bridges expressed. “The efforts of these individuals elevate the extraordinary experience at TCMH.”

Evans received the Sunflower Award for being nominated twice by two patients, JoEllen and Diane.

In the first nomination, JoEllen praised Bonnie for her exceptional people skills. She mentioned that Bonnie was very kind and helpful, aiding promptly whenever she was called upon. Bonnie was always cheerful, attentive, and ready to help. JoEllen expressed her satisfaction with Bonnie’s service and said she would choose her as her aide if she ever had to stay at the hospital again.

In the second nomination, Diane said Bonnie offered to wash her hair at her bedside during her hospital stay. Diane was grateful and accepted the offer, as she could not clean her hair alone. Bonnie washed, rinsed, cream rinsed, dried and brushed Diane’s hair carefully. Diane was very impressed with Bonnie’s bedside manners and will happily recommend her to anyone. Diane described Bonnie as genuinely amazing.

“Bonnie’s dedication and compassion as a CNA truly make a difference in ensuring patients receive the care they need,” Shelly Hawkins, TCMH medical-surgical director, said. Her contributions to our medical-surgical department are invaluable, and she truly deserves this award.”

Evans received a special recognition certificate and a bouquet of fresh sunflowers. Nominations for the Sunflower Award are accepted year-round from patients, family members and colleagues. Award winners are selected and recognized annually.
