Houston Landing invites you to a thoughtful conversation between HISD Superintendent Mike Miles and the students he serves, exploring the trials and triumphs of his first year.

Four graduating seniors from HISD high schools impacted by Superintendent Miles’ policies will talk on stage with the leader of the city’s public school system.

This event is designed to educate, entertain and give people an experience that inspires understanding, action or insight.

Here are three reasons not to miss it:

    1. “This event will be one of the first times Superintendent Miles has had an organic, public conversation with Houston ISD students about his controversial changes to the district — providing accountability and empathy,” according to Houston Landing HISD reporter Asher Leher-Small, who will facilitate the conversation.

“Miles’ overhaul of HISD, the largest school district in Texas, represents one of the most significant education reforms underway anywhere in the country right now. The students will share first-person insights of their experiences this year and Miles will respond to their questions in real time. It should be an illuminating conversation.”

    2. The big idea is that students have the most riding on these changes, so it’s important to understand their experiences. But data on their learning gains is not likely to be released until the fall. In the meantime, Houston Landing seeks to understand and share the student experience with the community.

Miles’ policy changes have dominated these students’ senior years, and the best way to understand an issue is to talk directly to the people impacted by it.

    3. To ensure those most committed to Houston’s students and teachers can take action to make their lives better.

Immediately following, the Collaborative for Children, Discover U, and Family to Family Network, among other civic organizations, will host tables where you can learn more about supporting those in the HISD community.
