Houston At Risk Of Massive Floods

A new study shows that US counties are most likely to be hit by damaging floods. Harris Country, home to Houston, is at the top of that list.

LawnStarter provided research about floods by country. It looked at flood risk, economic impact, preparedness, and population vulnerability. This, in turn, was based on riverine flooding, coastal flooding, mobile homes, the presence of people over 60, and estimated losses. A total of 943 countries were considered. The authors noted, “U.S. cities generate so much stormwater runoff each year that it could supply 93% of the nation’s municipal and industrial water usage.”

Houston’s score was 63.87. In second place, Bergen County had a score of 60.98. Bergen Country is across the Hudson River from New York City. Ocean County, NJ, is third with a score of 57.67. It is just north of Atlantic City, which was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Atlantic City, NJ, is next at 53.58.

Most of the damage is likely to be from hurricanes, which have hit Houston on the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Coast. In each case, these storms have driven insurance prices up and, in many cases, real estate values down.
