On Wednesday, the Houston Astros announced that RHP JP France would undergo right shoulder surgery. According to France's agent, the surgery will be season-ending for him. France pitched in five games in 2024, going 0-3 with a 7.46 ERA. His best outing came vs the Atlanta Braves where he pitched five innings allowing just two runs off four hits with four strikeouts.

In addition on Thursday, the Astros announced that RHP Oliver Ortega underwent surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow, and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

This was the second surgical procedure that Ortega had undergone this season. In March, he underwent surgery on his right elbow to remove loose bodies. He has been on the IL since March.

Ortega, 27, was claimed off waivers by the Astros from the Twins on Oct. 5, 2023, and appeared in two Spring Training games for the Astros this season, both in relief. He has made 45 relief appearances in the Major Leagues over parts of three seasons with the Angels (2021-22) and Twins (2023), posting a 4.03 ERA in 58.0 innings of work with one save.
