SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) — Tropical Storm Beryl could soon be felt here in the U.S.

The American Red Cross tells us volunteers from South Carolina are now in Texas preparing.

With the sun shining in Houston, Texas Friday morning…

“It’s sunny outside we have some clouds, it’s warm,” Spartanburg Resident in Texas with American Red Cross, Sharadyn Eldridge said.

Residents and disaster relief volunteers are preparing for weather conditions to worsen.

The American Red Cross says current projections show the storm going into Texas, and thousands of people may need emergency shelter.

“Right now, we are in the pre deployment phase. We are setting up cots, getting what facilities we are going to use, basically getting everything transferred to the facilities that we will be using if people have to evacuate due to the hurricane,” Eldridge said.

Beryl has set records as the first hurricane beginning in June to ever to hit category 4 and the first storm before September to go from tropical depression to major hurricane in under 48 hours.

The American Red Cross says they are rushing final preparations to help tens of thousands of people in the path of tropical storm Beryl as the storm takes aim at the Gulf Coast.

“They do have signs up along the roads, letting them know to be prepared,” Eldridge said.

Crews say they are getting ready for the impact of the storm by gathering volunteers and prepositioning relief supplies in Texas. People who live there are being warned of what’s to come.

The American Red Cross says so far, eight volunteers from South Carolina have been assigned to support the relief operation. They say another disaster response vehicle is also on stand-by to deploy if needed.

“I am really hoping that we are able to provide help and that sense of security and support is what I am really hoping we are able to provide the people of Texas at this time,” Eldridge said.

According to the Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Beryl is only the second category 5 storm recorded in July since 2005.
