For those seeking relief from the heat, city officials and nonprofits have opened cooling centers around town.
What they're saying: "If you think you need to go to a cooling center, please go," Sen. Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston) said at a press conference Tuesday.
The following city centers are open Wednesday:
- West Gray Multi-Purpose Center, 1475 W Gray St., 2pm to 6pm
- Moody Community Center, 3725 Fulton St., 2pm to 8pm.
American Red Cross has opened two shelters:
- BakerRipley Gulfton Sharpstown Campus, 6500 Rookin, 24 hours
- BakerRipley Ripley House, 4410 Navigation, 24 hours
And YMCA has seven locations open:
- Duncan, 10655 Clay Road, 5am to 9pm
- Perry, 1700 W League City Parkway, League City, 4:30am to 9pm
- Tellepsen, 808 Pease St., 5am to 9pm
- Trotter, 1331 Augusta Drive, 5am to 9pm
- Weekley, 7101 Stella Link Blvd., 5am to 9pm
- Alief, 7850 Howell Sugarland Road, 6am to 8pm
- International Services, 3110 Hayes Road, 8:30am to 5pm
And Reliant Energy opened Beat the Heat centers . Hours vary:
- Southwest Multi-Service Center, 6400 High Star Drive
- Hardy Community Center, 11901 W Hardy Road
- Community Family Centers, 7524 Avenue E
- Flukinger Community Center, 16003 Lorenzo St., Channelview
- East Harris County Activity Center, 7340 Spencer Highay, Pasadena
- Smart Financial Centre, 18111 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land

The city offered safety tips for those who are unable to access air conditioning:
- Drink lots of water, and avoid beverages with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat to help prevent sunburn and heat-related illness.
- Take frequent cool baths or showers.
