This $1.6 Million Contemporary Home in Texas Was Built Around a 200-Year-Old Pecan Tree

A legit treehouse for adults landed on the market last October in Texas. The one-of-a-kind residence, perched 13 feet above the ground in Houston’s First Ward Art District, was initially listed for $1.75 million. It’s now going for $155,000 less—that’s just under $1.6 million—with all of the same unique features that allow its designer-given credit as a “livable piece of art” to remain true.

Set next to American Statesmanship Park (aka Mount Rush Hour due to its location alongside the I-10 freeway), the abode at 1002 Edwards Street provides an up-close view of sculptor and painter David Adickes’ 18-foot-tall busts of four national and local political figures, including Abraham Lincoln and Sam Houston. The city’s renowned “Be Someone” bridge can also be seen.

The home was built in 2023 and designed by Scott Strassers of Strasser Design, which specializes in residential and retail projects like the local Eve France Boutique. Two beds and baths are featured within the house, which sits upon stilts that position it at tree canopy level and was in fact designed to wrap around and preserve a majestic 200-year-old pecan tree. Christina Rodriguez and Laura Mudd of Douglas Elliman hold the listing.

The facade is primarily made of a steel rainscreen that makes it energy-efficient and resistant to corrosion from the natural elements, according to the listing. Stacked wood planks form a screen around the back of the carport that’s tucked under the home at street level, and a wood and steel staircase leads up beneath the pecan’s leafy branches to the front door.

Custom millwork made from exotic wood veneers, imported porcelain floors, and book-matched Carrera marble countertops are used throughout the 2,276-square-foot abode. You might first notice those details in the living/dining room that sits opposite the gourmet kitchen. The bedrooms are in a wing of their own, with the primary suite’s en-suite bath stealing the show, offering dual sinks and a marble-clad soaking tub beneath a skylight.

The tree, which balances out Strasser’s sharp-edged construction, is undoubtedly the heart of the home, and large picture windows ensure the leafy canopy is visible from almost every room. For a closer look at the tree, a wooden balcony is positioned in the shade of its ancient limbs.

Following a March decline, the housing market in Texas seemed to be on the rebound in April 2024, according to Norda Real Estate Investments , which researches top real estate growth markets. San Antonio and Dallas saw the highest recoveries, with eight and four percent increases in home sales, respectively. Experts are also predicting that an influx of homes listed due to rising mortgage rates could lead to a “balanced market” with more options for buyers.
