Kate Upton opens up on ‘absolutely insane’ life as baseball wife after ‘accidentally’ falling in love with Justin Verlander

Kate Upton had no clue what she was getting herself into falling in love with a baseball player.

The supermodel and actress, who is married to Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, made an appearance on the “Chicks in the Office” podcast where she opened up about being the wife of a baseball star.

“Being a baseball wife is absolutely insane, like this schedule is wild, it’s so long. I didn’t know,” Upton, 32, said. “I accidentally fell in love. I had no idea that there were this many games.”

MLB’s spring training begins in February, and the 162-game regular season lasts six months, from late March until late September or early October. The postseason then takes about another month.

“No consecutive off days, only Mondays and Thursdays,” Upton said, jokingly describing the two off days as her favorite.

“I’m like I don’t see him, especially when you start getting into late playoffs when the baseball is so exciting, but you’re like, ‘I haven’t seen my husband in months, like they better win.’”

The Astros entered the MLB All-Star break with a 50-46 record, one game behind the AL West-leading Mariners (52-46).

Verlander, who made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2005, has been with Houston for six seasons, excluding a short stint with the Mets in 2023.

The 41-year-old has a 3.95 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 57 innings this season across 10 starts.

“To watch someone you love out there and have no control, it was a totally new experience, and so it already started this nervous energy running through me like, ‘Oh no’!” said Upton, who recently made her fourth appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.

“And you want them to do well and you want them to feel good, you know, he’s my husband. I want him to come home and be happy and not be disappointed in how he played or what happened.”

Upton and Verlander first met during a commercial shoot in 2012, according to People.

They started dating in 2014, got engaged before the 2016 baseball season, and exchanged vows in 2017, just days after the pitcher won the World Series in his first season with the Astros.

The couple welcomed their daughter Genevieve “Vivi” Upton Verlander, 6, the following year.
