The Houston Texans are signing veteran guard Chris Reed and wide receiver Quintez Cephus, according to multiple reports. Reed, who turns 32 next Monday, has secured a chance at a 10th NFL season.

Houston Texans guard Chris Reed has made 30 starts in 70 career NFL games

Reed went undrafted in 2015 out of Minnesota State University. He played nine games and made one start for the Vikings (2022-23) over the last two seasons. Out of 70 career NFL games, he’s made 30 starts overall.

The 6-foot-3, 314-pound lineman also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-18), Miami Dolphins (2019), Carolina Panthers (2019-20), and Indianapolis Colts (2021). He played exclusively at left guard with Carolina in 2020.

Minnesota relied on Reed as a viable backup center late in the 2022 season, when Garrett Bradbury rehabbed an injury. However, he spent most of last season on the Vikings’ reserve list.

Meanwhile, Quintez Cephus was selected 166th overall by the Detroit Lions during the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Cephus, 26, was among the first wave of NFL players suspended in 2023 for violating the league’s gambling policy. He was released by the Lions following the incident. The league reinstated him on April 18.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound wideout had played three seasons (2020-22) with Detroit before his release.

Houston added DE Malik Fisher, waived three players

In 22 career games (six starts), Cephus has totals of 37 receptions, 568 receiving yards, four touchdown receptions, and 26 first downs. The Georgia native also has a catch percentage of 61.7%.

In addition to signing Reed and Cephus, the Texans also waived three players on Wednesday: guard LaDarius Henderson, wide receiver Jaxon Janke, and defensive end Pheldarius Payne.

Houston recently placed several players on injury/illness lists as well. Defensive end Dylan Horton, who is in remission from lymphoma, is on the non-football illness list.

Fullback Andrew Beck, linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips, and defensive back D’Angelo Ross are on the physically unable to perform list.

Furthermore, the Texans became the first team to have all of its players report to training camp on Wednesday, according to ProFootallTalk’s Josh Alper.

According to the NFL’s daily transaction report, Reed was signed to the 90-man roster. The report also confirms the signings of Cephus and defensive end Malik Fisher.
