Beryl's estimated damage in the billions

Hurricane Beryl is expected to cost the Houston region billions of dollars in damage.

By the numbers: Insurers will need to pay between $2.5 billion and $3.5 billion for property damage caused by Beryl's winds in Harris, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties, according to an estimate by analytics firm CoreLogic, the Houston Business Journal reports .

The big picture: AccuWeather's preliminary estimate for the total damage and economic loss from Beryl is $28 billion to $32 billion nationwide, including damage to homes, infrastructure, job and wage losses, and government cleanup expenses.

Flashback: Hurricane Harvey in 2017 caused at least $159 billion in total damage, making it the second-costliest hurricane after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 ($200 billion) to hit the U.S.

Meanwhile, Houstonians are tired of the constant storms and power outages, leading some to think about leaving.

    • In a 2023 University of Houston survey, 29% of respondents said they were considering leaving Houston, at least in part because of the severe weather.
    • "Certainly, one-third of the Houston population's not going to leave, but some of them will, and so, Houston will lose some people who otherwise would have been great contributors to our city and region," Mark Jones with UH's Hobby School of Public Affairs told ABC13 .
