Texans host one of the NFL's top remaining free agent RBs for a workout

The Houston Texans have a pretty loaded offense this year, as long as you're willing to overlook the potentially fatal weakness that is their offensive line outside of left tackle Laremy Tunsil and right guard Shaq Mason. Nevertheless, the best teams never stop churning the bottom of their rosters and are always on the lookout for talent. The Texans are no exception to the rule, and apparently they may be in the market for another running back.

According to a report by Aaron Wilson at KPRC2, Houston has worked out former Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers, who is arguably the best remaining free agent at his position.

Akers was a second-round pick by the Rams in the 2020 NFL draft. As a rookie he posted 625 rushing yards and two touchdowns in limited action. The following season he only appeared in one game due to injury. Akers' breakout campaign came in 2022 when he started 15 games, totaling 786 yards and seven touchdowns.

Despite the promise that he showed the previous season, Akers was traded to the Vikings for a conditional sixth-round draft pick just a couple weeks into the 2023 campaign. In Minnesota Akers was stuck on the depth chart beneath Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler. He only appeared in six games, totaling 138 yards and one touchdown.

If he winds up signing with the Texans Akers would most likely project as the third option at running back behind Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce.
