Chilling nuclear bomb map predicts Houston 'destruction' and 90,000 fatalities after 'Little Boy' explosion

An interactive map created by nuclearsecrecy.com paints a terrifying picture of the catastrophic damage that would be inflicted on Houston if a nuclear bomb were to be detonated within its metropolitan area. The maps , crafted by Alex Wellerstein, a nuclear historian at the Stevens Institute of Technology, illustrate the devastating aftermath of nuclear weapons in major cities globally.

If a weapon akin to Little Boy - the bomb unleashed on Hiroshima by the United States on August 9, 1945 - were to be detonated in the Texas city, the devastation would be unimaginable. The Little Boy had a yield of 15 kilotons.

According to Wellerstein's expert modeling , such an event would result in 90,170 fatalities. Furthermore, there would be 65,040 injuries. The light blast damage radius would extend over two miles in distance, likely resulting in shattered windows and potential injuries, despite being the least severe impact of a nuclear bomb explosion in a populated area.

The hypothetical explosion's fireball radius would extend as far as the Saint Joseph Medical Center, according to the map. Everything within this radius would be instantly vaporized.

The heavy blast damage radius would spread for a quarter of a mile, severely damaging or completely demolishing concrete buildings. This level of blast, with an almost certain fatality rate, would primarily affect the Little Tranquility Park area, as per the map.

The radiation radius from the blast would extend just under a mile from the detonation point. It would likely be fatal for most local residents. 15 percent of survivors would probably die within a month due to cancer caused by the radiation levels.

According to the model, the moderate blast damage radius would extend for just under a mile, causing most residential buildings to collapse and leading to widespread fatalities. The risk of fires spreading is also increased, which would only add to the destruction.

The thermal radiation radius would extend just over a mile. With this, there is a 100 percent certainty of third-degree burns. However, this reaction to radiation is often painless because pain nerves are destroyed in the process.

Fortunately, these scenarios are purely hypothetical and the likelihood of such an event is extremely low. Nonetheless, the maps present a chilling possibility.
