Astros surprisingly predicted to land Mets slugger in blockbuster trade

The Houston Astros are in first place in their division and potentially on the verge of a massive trade.

Houston has been linked to Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but he's not the only powerful slugger on the Astros' radar at present.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic predicted this week that Houston could acquire New York Mets four-time All-Star Pete Alonso before the deadline.

"Astros owner Jim Crane covets superstars," Rome said. "Houston does not have the prospect capital to pull off another blockbuster. With Crane involved, it sometimes doesn’t matter. The Astros should be prioritizing pitching, but if Crane wants Pete Alonso or Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fix his mistake of signing José Abreu, general manager Dana Brown may have to make it happen."

Alonso to the Astros seems like a pipe dream, especially with the Mets eyeing the playoffs heading into August. New York was just a half game back of the top spot in the National League Wild Card race heading into Friday.

If any franchise can pull off the unthinkable before July 30, however, it's Houston. The Astros have already miraculously climbed back into first place in the American League West after a horrific start to the season.

Adding Alonso would just be another wondrous chapter in Houston's 2024 campaign thus far.
