NFL Analyst Points Out Major Issue With Texans QB C.J. Stroud

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is one of the top up and coming stars in the NFL. He just put forth a historically good rookie campaign, led the Texans to a shocking division title and even guided the team to a playoff win.

Now, heading into 2024, Stroud and Co. are riding high and are expected to repeat as AFC South division champions. That’s especially after Houston added wide receiver Stefon Diggs and edge rusher Danielle Hunter this offseason.

But is Stroud actually a great Fantasy Football quarterback?

Andrew Erickson of FantasyPros doesn’t think so.

Erickson cites Stroud’s lack of rushing ability as a big reason why you shouldn’t be taking the Texans’ signal-caller early in your draft, saying it would actually be more appropriate to draft him closer to the top 50.

Stroud was QB9 in points per game last season, and 15th in expected points per game,” Erickson wrote. “To me, Stroud’s second-year projection reminds me so much of the market’s hype on Trevor Lawrence. I pushed back on it last year, and it worked.”

What will C.J. Stroud bring to the table in 2024?

Let’s make something clear here: Erickson is not saying that Stroud isn’t a good quarterback. He is merely saying that there are better options out there in Fantasy Football, particularly more mobile quarterbacks who can provide fantasy points with their legs in addition to their arm.

The fact of the matter is that Stroud is one of the most exciting young players in the NFL right now, and big things are expected of him and the Texans this September.

But are we putting too much pressure on Stroud in what is only his second season?

Remember: the sophomore slump is a thing, and Stroud isn’t necessarily immune to it. Yes, the Ohio State product has an elite set of weapons in wide receivers Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell, not to mention tight end Dalton Schultz and running back Joe Mixon.

However, defenses have now had an entire offseason to study Stroud, so opponents will surely be throwing him some different looks in 2024.

Plus, there is pressure on Stroud to consistently deliver the football to Diggs, who amassed well over 100 targets in each of his four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

If Stroud heavily favors his familiar receivers like Collins and Dell, it could end up creating problems with Diggs, who has a history of volatile behavior.

We’ll see if C.J. Stroud can answer the bell for the Texans this season.
