A Boston -bound United Airlines flight had to be redirected and forced to touch down due to an onboard “biohazard” incident that left the crew “ vomiting ” and passengers demanding masks.

Knewz.com has learned that the incident on Sunday, July 28, marked the latest hiccup in the long line of commercial flight mishaps.

United Airlines Flight 2477 departed from Houston ’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, bound for the Boston Logan International Airport.

However, the Boeing 737 flight had to be diverted to the Washington Dulles International Airport around two hours into the trip, in order to undergo a “deep clean” after a passenger onboard got sick.

Radio traffic from the flight, posted on X, captured a flight crew member describing the situation onboard, which had gotten “quite bad,” with passengers and fellow crew members falling sick as well due to a “biohazard.”

“I’ve talked to the crew, and sounds like it’s quite bad back there. It’s still really bad. The crew is vomiting, and passengers all around are asking for masks,” the audio said.

“With this kind of being a biohazard, I think we need to get this plane on the ground ASAP,” the radio traffic audio added.

Observant commenters wrote under the audio clip posted on X that “biohazard may be code for explosive diarrhea.”

It was reported that none of the passengers or flight crew members required medical attention when the flight landed at the Washington Dulles International Airport.

“The aircraft is currently undergoing a deep clean and we are working to get customers on their way to Boston soon,” United Airlines said in a statement about the incident.

It is worth noting that a similar incident happened back in September 2023, when a Delta Airlines flight had to turn back due to “passenger diarrhea” all over the aircraft.

An aviation enthusiast recorded the transmission between the flight and the air traffic control via LiveATC and shared it on X , formerly Twitter.

“This is a biohazard issue… We’ve had a passenger who’s had diarrhea all the way through the airplane, so they want us to come back to Atlanta ,” the pilot of the Airbus A350 aircraft told air traffic control .

In the comments, the person who posted the transmission on X added to the story that they apparently “saw a pic showing the aisle, it was literally down the ‘entire’ aisle!”

An alleged Federal Aviation Authority flight strip – a small piece of paper air traffic controllers use to monitor flights – appeared to confirm the “biohazard” incident as well. “Divert to ATL – passenger diarrhea all over aircraft – biohazard,” the alleged FAA flight strip read.

Following this “biohazard” fiasco, the flight returned to Atlanta at 10:39 p.m. and was scrubbed down by the cleaning crew.

One of the passengers on board wrote on X , “Both my wife and I were on the flight. It was a mess. The pilots made the right decision to turn around. The ground crew ripped out the carpet and put new in. Considering the circumstances, the ground crew did a great job, along the attendants and the pilots.”

“Delta flight 194 from Atlanta to Barcelona returned to Atlanta following an onboard medical issue,” a Delta Airlines spokesperson said in a statement to Insider at the time.

“Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to thoroughly clean the airplane and get our customers to their final destination. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”

The spokesperson did not elaborate on what the “medical issue” was.

Notably, the recent “biohazard” incident was the second United Airlines flight mishap in July alone. Earlier this month, a United Airlines Boeing 757-200 flight from Los Angeles to Denver lost one of its wheels moments after takeoff.
