    Priority violations found at 34 Livingston County restaurants in June

    LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Each month, the Livingston County Health Department inspects restaurants, schools and other facilities for unsafe food practices.

    Good food safety practices are critical to preventing foodborne illness and promoting public health. The Daily publishes reports on "priority" violations — ones that could "directly lead to contamination of food or increase the risk of transmitting a foodborne illness,” as well as corrective measures taken.     A total of 34 dining establishments inspected in June had priority violations. Follow-up inspections of these violations are also provided if they occurred in June.

    Fifteen priority violations were found at:

    Firewood Grill, 1202 Grand River Ave. in Howell

    Cracked eggshells were stored in a carton with uncracked eggs. There was no chlorine at a dish machine. It needed repair. An employee handled raw meat and did not wash their hands before putting on food handling gloves, then did not wash their hands after handling raw meat with gloves before putting on another pair of gloves to prepare ready-to-eat food. Foods were holding at 46-51 degrees in a prep cooler. Burger patties and coleslaw were discarded.

    Soups, stocks, sauces, and lasagna were heated improperly. An employee handled raw burger with a gloved hand and then placed lettuce, tomato, and pickles on a plate without changing gloves. There were no logs or records for vacuum sealed raw meats. There was no person in charge at the restaurant during the inspection.

    Kitchen employees didn't demonstrate any knowledge of food safety. There were mice droppings on a dish machine and the floor. Numerous house-prepared foods that were not date marked. There was no soap at a hand sink in an employee bathroom. There were no paper towels in an employee bathroom. Towels and cleaning supplies were stored in a hand sink. Pop guns, a deli slicer, a fry cutter, a deflector plate in an ice machine, and microwaves were soiled.

    Five priority violations were found at:

    Shaka Cafe, 1123 E. Grand River Ave. in Howell

    Bottles of juice and energy shots weren't treated with a five log reduction and or labeled to warn consumers that the items had not been pasteurized. The establishment designed and implemented labels. Mesh screening on the juice machine needed to be cleaned more frequently. Containers of overnight oats were not date marked. A date marking system was implemented.

    Packaged peanut butter balls, overnight oats, in-house bottled juices, and in-house bottled energy shots were packaged individually and not properly labeled with ingredients, allergens, or location. The establishment designed and implemented labels. There was dried, soiled food debris on the screen of a juicer. It was clean during a follow-up inspection.

    Four priority violations were found at:

    Cajun Joe's, 5757 Whitmore Lake Road in Brighton

    Raw chicken was stored above ready-to-eat food. It was moved. Several pans of food were three days beyond their discard dates. The food was discarded. An open gallon of milk had a sell-by date of two weeks prior. It was discarded. Foods in hot holding units were at 112-126 degrees. They were returned to the stove and brought to 165 degrees.

    Three priority violations were found at:

    Custard Corner, 3620 Avon St. in Hartland Township

    A custard machine was holding vanilla custard mix at 48 degrees and chocolate at 46 degrees. The vanilla custard mix was discarded. The chocolate was moved to a walk-in cooler. Ground beef and ham were past their seven-day discard dates. Feta was not dated. Two gallons of milk were past their sell-by date. They were discarded. There were no chlorine test strips. Violations had been corrected as of a follow-up inspection.

    Dunham Hills Golf Club, 13561 Dunham Lake Road in Hartland Township

    A hot dog warmer was set too low. The hot dogs were at 130 degrees. The warmer was turned up to 140 degrees. There was no soap at a hand sink. Some was provided during the inspection. A paper towel dispenser needed batteries.

    Great China, 5757 Whitmore Lake Road in Brighton

    Bean sprouts were holding at 62 degrees in a bowl stored on top of a line cooler. They were discarded. An employee rinsed off their gloves. They were discarded. Employees were washing their hands in a three-compartment sink instead of a hand sink.

    Howell Eagles, 141 Schroeder Park in Howell

    There was a mason jar of home-prepared garlic in the cooler. It was discarded. There were multiple packages of wild game in a freezer that did not come from a state or federal inspected facility. They were removed from the facility. Two cans were dented. They were discarded.

    Log Cabin, 5393 E. Grand River Ave. in Howell

    There was no chlorine sanitizer solution at the dish machine. Logs and records for curing and acidifying were jumbled in a box instead of in a binder. A sign welcoming dogs on the patio was posted. The establishment would need to apply for a variance.

    Marco's Pizza, 1222 E. M-36 in Pinckney

    A walk-in cooler was holding foods at 43-45 degrees. Air from the compressor unit was 44 degrees. Foods in a pizza prep cooler were holding at 44-46 degrees. Ambient air in the compartment was 42 degrees. Pizza, steak, and meatballs were not date marked. They were date marked during the inspection. A hand towel dispenser at a hand sink was empty. It was refilled.

    Two priority violations were found at:

    Arby's, 1385 N. Burkhart Road in Howell

    Foods were holding around 48 degrees in a line cooler. They included sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, cheeses, and cooked meats. Staff were instructed to use ice to keep product at 41 degrees or below until the cooler is repaired. There was no hot water at a sink in the men's restroom.

    Be My Guest Cafe, 10691 W. Grand River Ave. in Fowlerville

    A beverage cooler was holding food at 44-47 degrees. Cooked meats, cut watermelon, cut lettuce, and dairy were relocated to another cooler. Soils on top of the septic mound were soft and visibly saturated. The septic drain field was evaluated by the health department. No failures were observed. The owner agreed to monitor and maintain the system.

    Block Brewing Co., 1140 S. Michigan Ave. in Howell

    Hard boiled eggs, house-prepared salsa, pasta salad, and potato salad were expired beyond their seven-day discard dates. They were discarded. Foods, including pasta salad, cut lettuce, cheese, and cooked ribs were not date marked. They were properly dated during the inspection.

    Fiesta Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, 10016 Highland Road/M-59 in Hartland Township

    Ice had melted in an ice bath holding coleslaw. Several chemical spray bottles were not labeled. They were labeled during the inspection.

    Hartland Brewing Co., 1836 N. Old US-23 in Hartland Township

    There was no soap or paper towels at a hand sink. Some were provided.

    Jezebel's Saloon, 205 W. Main St. in Brighton

    No sanitizer was detected in the bar glass washer because the dispenser tube was full of air. The system was primed, and proper sanitizer concentration was confirmed. Two cans of tomatoes were badly dented. They were set aside to return to the vendor.

    Leo's Coney Island, 11020 Highland Road/M-59 in Hartland Township

    An employee touched a raw burger with food handling gloves on and changed gloves to handle ready-to-eat foods without washing their hands. A hand sink was out of paper towel. Some was provided.

    MOD Pizza, 8605 W. Grand River Ave. in Brighton

    A cooler was holding foods at 44 degrees. Items on the bottom were moved to a walk-in cooler, and items on top were put on ice. A dish machine was sanitizing at 25-40 ppm chlorine. A technician was called.

    Mugg and Bopps, 11055 Highland Road/M-59 in Hartland Township

    The establishment was out of sanitizer test strips. The business emailed a photo of a test kit to the health department. Equipment was blocking a hand sink. It was removed.

    New China King, 1104 E. Grand River Ave. in Howell

    Raw chicken and raw eggs were improperly stored in a cooler. They were relocated. A can opener blade and stand mixer were soiled. They were cleaned.

    Timber Trace Golf Club, 1 Champions Circle in Pinckney

    A chemical spray bottle and a gallon of bleach were stored improperly. They were relocated. Several refillable spray bottles were not labeled. They were labeled during the inspection.

    One priority violation was found at:

    Acapulco Mexican Grill, 675 W Grand River Ave. in Brighton

    A container of tamales was dated improperly.

    Best Western Hartland, 10087 Highland Road/M-59 in Hartland Township

    A paper towel dispenser was empty, and a refill could not be found. A roll of paper towels was placed by a hand sink.

    Black Rock Bar and Grill, 10100 Highland Road/M-59 in Hartland Township

    An employee handled raw meat with food handling gloves and changed gloves without washing their hands.

    Brighton Bar and Grill, 400 W. Main St. in Brighton

    A hand towel dispenser was empty. It was refilled.

    Brookdale Brighton, 833 E. Grand River Ave. in Brighton

    No sanitizer was detected in a dish machine due to mechanical issues. It was repaired.

    Holiday Inn Express, 1397 N. Burkhart Road in Howell

    A box of raw sausage was stored over hard-boiled eggs and cheese in a refrigerator. It was relocated.

    Jameson's Irish Pub, 110 E. Grand River Ave. in Brighton

    Aioli sauce, portioned roast beef slices, yellow sauce, chicken noodle, barley soup, bruschetta soup with cut tomatoes, and coleslaw were beyond their discard dates. They were discarded.

    Lilly Poke Poke Bowl, 4433 Old US-23 in Brighton

    A sanitizer dispenser at a three-compartment sink was empty. It was refilled.

    Little Caesars, 1277 E. M-36 in Pinckney

    Pre-prepped pizzas were staged in a rack at room temperature prior to baking but did not have proper time controls per corporate policy. Approved electronic timers were not set as required.

    McDonald's, 2205 W. Grand River Ave. in Howell

    Spray bottle containing peroxide, glass cleaner, and super cleaner were stored improperly. They were relocated.

    Pinckney Diner, 150 S. Howell St. in Pinckney

    A can of strawberry filling was badly dented and leaking at the top seam. It was set aside to return to the vendor.

    Potbelly, 8539 Grand River Ave., Suite B, in Brighton

    Four containers of deli meat that were prepared that day were marked with old stickers. They were re-dated.

    The Crunchy Pickle, 116 N. State St. in Howell

    "No splash" bleach was used to sanitize dishes and other wares. The establishment purchased approved chlorine sanitizer.

    The Reserve Steakhouse, 317 W. Main St. in Brighton

    Au gratin potatoes were cooled in a proper metal pan, but the depth was approximately three inches instead of two inches or less.
