EPA ends oversight of clean up related to Iowa plant explosion
The U-S Environmental Protection Agency has ended its oversight of clean-up at the eastern Iowa recycling facility that exploded in late 2022. Asphalt shingles were being recycled at the C6-Zero plant in Marengo. Twenty employees were injured and part of Marengo had to be evacuated when the plant exploded. Six months later, after delays in the timeline for clean-up, state officials asked the federal government to start overseeing the removal of contaminated water and soil from the site.

WATERLOO, Iowa — Petitioners are pushing for the option to vote on the Waterloo School Board’s recently approved school merger plan. The Waterloo school board voted this week to merge the city’s two high schools, Waterloo West and Waterloo East, into a single institution by the end of the decade. The plan, approved by a 5-2 vote, involves constructing a new high school on the current Central Middle School site, with construction slated to begin next spring.

Natalie Griffioen to teach philosophy at Dordt
Natalie Griffioen has accepted a position as Instructor of Philosophy at Dordt University. Griffioen is completing her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to graduate school, Griffioen worked in human resources at the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank in Washington, D.C. She and her husband, Paul, have relocated to Sioux Center from Berkeley, California.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa — — Chris Bishop, a Cedar Rapids resident, said he is one of many who have experienced harassment and unwelcome visits from door-to-door solicitors.
