Thousands of ears to be served at Estherville’s Sweet Corn Days
Organizers plan to serve 6000 ears of sweet corn tomorrow during Sweet Corn Days in Estherville. The festival started last night in Estherville’s Library Square with a “burning of the cobs” and the making of s’mores over the bonfire. Lexie Ruter of the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce says one of tonight’s highlights features hula hoops. “Following the hula hoop contest, we’ve got our fireworks,” she says. “We pay extra money for extra high fireworks so you can see them over the trees and over the buildings.”

DMACC announces new executive dean of Newton Campus
Bill Peters has been named the new executive dean of Des Moines Area Community College’s Newton Campus, the college announced Wednesday. Peters started his new role on July 15. He replaces Joe DeHart, who recently retired from DMACC. Peters served as principal of Newton High School for 20 years before coming to DMACC. “I have worked with DMACC for 20 years as a high school principal and am very familiar with the purpose and mission of the Newton Campus,” Peters said in a prepared statement. “I believe having DMACC in our community is a great benefit and provides enhanced opportunities for students.” Before moving to Newton, Peters served as a teacher and principal at schools in California and Wyoming. Some of his goals at the DMACC Newton Campus include maintaining a good working relationship with the county schools and promoting the growth of adult education to meet the needs of surrounding communities. “[Bill] has played an important role serving the Newton community and has been involved in education and serving students for nearly his entire career. Bill is very well respected in Newton and the surrounding communities and will make a great leader at the DMACC Newton Campus,” Bill LaTour, DMACC vice president of operations, said in a prepared statement. Peters holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming.
Waukee school district to hold ribbon cutting for new aquatic facility
The Waukee Community School District is holding a ribbon cutting on Monday for the natatorium, a new aquatics facility featuring a competition pool. The pool can support two eight-lane competitions simultaneously. The facility, pictured here in a rendering, will be used by Waukee’s high school swimming and diving teams and for academic programming across the school district. The ribbon cutting will start at 3:30 p.m. at 1655 N.W. Douglas Parkway in Waukee. Parking is available between the natatorium and Trailridge School, and the event will take place at the main entrance on the east side of the facility.

Objections, time constraints delay Orient-Macksburg dissolution vote
(Orient) -- Plans to dissolve the Orient-Macksburg School District took a pivot earlier this week. Prior to a public hearing at a special meeting of the Orient-Macksburg School Board, the district and patrons in attendance received notice that a September 10th vote to dissolve the district wouldn't be possible. After the board voted to begin the dissolution process in June, a dissolution commission was formed primarily to develop boundary lines to separate the district to other neighboring school districts. However, Orient-Macksburg Superintendent Jeff Kruse tells KMA News two of the four surrounding districts, Creston and Winterset, filed objections to the initial proposal, which he adds delayed a process already facing a short time frame.
