Statement from the City on 209 W. 2nd St. N. Building
The August 10, 2020 derecho caused widespread damage in the City of Newton including significant damage to several buildings. The building owners of 209 W. 2nd St. N., Chedester Properties, LLC, failed to make repairs leaving the City with no choice but to seek legal recourse on behalf of our citizens to require the owner to make necessary repairs or demolish their building. That legal proceeding was resolved on October 2, 2023, through a Settlement Agreement between the two parties wherein Chedester Properties, LLC agreed to demolish the building as soon as possible but no later than February 2, 2024.

For the past 74 years, the Audubon T-Bone group has celebrated its annual Operation T-Bone Days as the town’s way to recognize and promote the beef industry. Every year, except for 2020, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the first weekend in August is dedicated to acknowledging Audubon’s impact in providing beef for consumers across Iowa and the United States. Tiffany Wittrock, Executive Director for Audubon Chamber of Commerce, says the City of Audubon played a crucial role in the transportation of cattle, giving the community a reason to celebrate.

Bankrupt nursing home says it owes Iowa taxpayers $1.1 million
(Fremont Co) A for-profit nursing home that has filed for bankruptcy says it owes Iowa taxpayers more than $1 million in fees the state failed to collect. In May, the for-profit Tabor Manor Care Center in Fremont County filed for bankruptcy, listing $1.3 million in assets and $2.3 million in liabilities.

This week, Iowa’s “detectable fetal heartbeat” law went into effect. Previously, Iowa permitted abortions until 22 weeks of pregnancy, although there were still barriers to accessing care.
