VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County is currently caring for more than two dozen dogs removed from a home over the weekend.

The dogs were recently rescued from a home in Hubbard Township after humane agents acted on a tip.

“The caller suspected that there were three to five dogs at the residence. There were suspected puppies that had passed away as well in this person’s care. When our officer arrived at the scene it was much different than three to five dogs. There were 26,” said Animal Welfare League CEO Bethany Cluckey.

Most of the dogs were removed from the home Saturday. Cluckey says the animals and their elderly owner were living in deplorable conditions.

“The dogs were all infested with fleas, the home was completely hoarded — so not a good situation for humans or animals,” Cluckey said.

The organization also contacted adult protective services. At this point, it’s unknown if the owner will face charges.

“Our humane officers work with our prosecutor to determine all of those things. It’s not always a black-and-white thing. So it’s all case by case,” she said.

AWL says they hope the animals will be ready for adoption in the next few weeks. The organization says it could always use adopters, volunteers, and of course donations to help care for animals in cases such as this.

“All of those things right now would be really great to have to get as many animals out of the building as possible, just so they aren’t sitting here in the kennel environment because it’s really stressful for them,” Cluckey said.
