ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — Deputies with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office arrested a New Bern man on June 29, after he fired a gun at deputies.

Earlier in the day on June 29, Onslow County Deputy Barcenas received a call from the Pamlico County Sheriff’s Office about a wanted man. Thirty-six year old John Matthew Nigh was wanted by the Pamlico County Sheriff’s office for Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, Larceny, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. Onslow County was contacted as Nigh resides in Hubert.

When deputies went to approach Nigh at his residence, Nigh tried to evade arrest by running out the back door of his home and into the woods behind. Nigh then fired two rounds from a small handgun at three deputies. None of the deputies were harmed. Nigh was taken into custody without further incident.

Nigh was taken to the Naval Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was then transported to the Onslow County Detention Center.

Nigh was ultimately charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer by Pointing a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by Felon, Resisting/Delaying/Obstructing an Officers, and Shooting Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.
