A Hudson USPS mail carrier was recently recognized for his role in saving an elderly woman who lived on his route.

Chris Poa, a 29-year veteran Hudson USPS worker, was honored with the Hudson EMS Life Saving Award.

While on his delivery route in June, Poa was prompted to stop and provide a wellness check on a 91-year old resident whom he noticed had not picked up her mail in several days. Poa had often said hello to the resident and holds short conversations with her, so he said he he had a feeling something was wrong.

Poa stopped his route, looked through the windows and thought he heard something. He saw her foot and called 911. When EMS arrived, there was no sign of entry. Hudson Police and Fire forced entry into the residence and found the resident on the ground. She had fallen and had been lying on the floor for more than 48 hours.

The woman, who turned out to be the mother of the wife of one of Hudson’s firefighters, was taken to the hospital in very serious condition.

Hudson EMS and Fire Chief Jerry Varnes presented Chris Poa with the Hudson EMS Life Saving Award in recognition of his immediate response by calling Hudson EMS after finding the senior citizen.
