By all accounts, the newest star of the Netflix series, "Beef", David Choe, should be showered in praise for his debut on-screen performance.

But instead, the untrained Los Angeles-born painter turned entrepreneur and newly budded actor was once the recipient of one of the most lucrative business deals in history. But, his recent foray into the acting space is being barred with controversy over a disturbing story he told on a 2014 podcast.

Alongside co-host and adult film star, Asa Akira, David talked about an aggressive and unredeemable sexual encounter from his past. Although the actor has since made a statement saying he was playing a character, the controversy is something Netflix and his co-stars, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, cannot be happy with.

But, David's erratic behaviour hasn't always got him into trouble. Back in 2004, when Facebook was nothing more than a promising startup, David made the rash decision to take Facebook stock over a $60,000 payout for a series of murals David painted at Facebook's Palo Alto headquarters.

When Facebook when public in 2012, its stock price opened at $38 per share -- making David a multi-millionaire overnight, with his stocks instantly being worth over $200 million.

Since then, David has been using his wealth to live out his wildest fantasies, including:

    • Living with the remote African "Hadza" tribe before filming a documentary on them
    • Giving his art away for free after a spiritual awakening
    • Fulfilling his adolescent sexual desires

And, most recently foraying into the world of acting, beginning with a featured extra role on the hit Disney series, The Mandalorian, before landing a lead role on the Netflix show, Beef, as the criminal entrepreneur, Isaac.

Being Asian American and Pacific Islander Month when David's controversy surfaced, Netflix and the rest of the well-represented cast would have undoubtedly loved nothing more than to celebrate the all-Asian cast -- something rarely seen in mainstream American movies/series.

But instead, it has acted as a smudge on the timeline of David's already controversy-filled life. Learn more about David's journey from starving to celebrity artist, here.
