Michiganders reached for their phones late Friday night, snapping pictures of the aurora borealis -- northern lights only visible because of a major geomagnetic storm.

If you missed them, don't fret, there is still hope to see them again tonight. Here's how...

Northern Lights Michigan: An Overview of the Aurora Borealis Phenomenon

Witnessing the Northern lights in Michigan (also known as the aurora borealis), is truly a spectacular experience. The celestial dance of lights across the Michigan sky is not only a stunning visual event but also a fascinating scientific phenomenon.

    According to experts:

Geomagnetic storms are major disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by energy from solar winds. Severe storms can occur after a coronal mass ejection, when the sun expels tons of plasma and magnetic fields.

The magnetically complex sunspot cluster 16 times the diameter of the Earth, could be seen particularly well from Northern states, such as Michigan and Maine.

For those eager to experience this natural phenomenon, the best viewing times for northern lights in Michigan are typically during the colder months from September to April. During these months, the nights are longer and darker, providing a perfect backdrop for the aurora's gleaming hues.

But, there has been a rare viewing in May, with stargazers staying up late to admire the starry skies.

Last night, social media was flooded with the majestic natural light show.

And, if you're a Michigan native, you're in luck. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting another colourful Saturday night, with the best time to view them being between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
