For everyone who is bemoaning the end of the Summer Olympics, the latest season of “Emily in Paris” is a whimsical escape to the City of Light that couldn’t come at a better time.

Season 4 picks up where Season 3 left off, and the first episode opens with a TikTok video posted by Camille’s younger brother, Timothée (yes, the one Emily slept with in Season 1). The viral video serves as both a creative refresher of last season’s drama for viewers and a plot device to pressure Emily (Lily Collins) to finally decide between Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount).

The love triangle reached a tipping point last season when Camille called off her wedding to Gabriel. She blamed him for still being in love with Emily in front of Alfie who left after telling her that he’s no one’s second choice. But Alfie’s leaving didn’t uncomplicate Emily’s choice at all because it turned out that Camille was pregnant.

The first five episodes of Part 1 — Part 2 of Season 4 streams Sept. 12 —  follow the fallout of that climactic final scene of Season 3. But even as Emily clears the air with Alfie, entertains the possibility of a relationship with Gabriel, and helps search for Camille who has gone missing, her dedication to work is constantly interrupted by her messy personal life.

A constant stream of friendship mess and hot men drama makes it difficult for Emily to balance her ambition with her chaotic personal life. And, of course, her work and personal life continue to intersect at the most inopportune of times (such as being the face of a romantic campaign with the tagline “love is in the air” with her ex-boyfriend who is no longer speaking to her).

In true “Emily in Paris” style, the outfits in the first five episodes of this season are a mix of high fashion and whimsy that more often than not cross over to wacky. Also, the side characters continue to steal moments with their big personalities, funny one-liners and tangled subplots. Highlights include Sylvie and Laurent trying to make their relationship work while she continues to run Agence Grateau and Laurent opens a new club in Paris. Julien embarking on a new career at JVMA, Luc struggling to fill Julien’s void, and Mindy still dating her boarding school crush turned billionaire and singing at a big music festival.
