Donald Trump Tries — And Fails — To Land 3-Word Jab At Kamala Harris

Former President Donald Trump tried to invoke a line previously used by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris during her vice presidential debate with Mike Pence in 2020, but failed to land a punch.

ABC’s Linsey Davis asked Harris to explain her evolution on the issues of fracking, mandatory government buyback programs for assault weapons and immigration.

“My values have not changed,” Harris said as she went on to explain her current policy positions.

When Trump was given a chance to respond to her comments, he accused Harris of supporting defunding the police.

“That’s not true,” Harris mouthed into her muted microphone.

Her response did not appear to sit well with Trump, who took the chance to make an apparent reference to a now-iconic comment Harris made during her debate with Pence nearly four years ago.

“Wait a minute,” Trump said. “I’m talking now. If you don’t mind. Please. Does that sound familiar?”

“Don’t lie,” Harris fired back.

Harris never called for defunding entire police departments but said “ we need to reimagine ” how much money is devoted to police compared with social services in crime-ridden communities to promote safety.

In October 2020, Pence tried to interrupt Harris several times while she was speaking during their face-off, but she repeatedly pushed back.

“Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking,” she said , in a line that has since gone viral on social media.

In the lead-up to the ABC News debate, the Harris campaign had called for both candidates’ microphones to stay on throughout the 90-minute event.

“Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own,” Harris campaign spokesperson Brian Fallon told The Hill last month.

While its request was not granted, the campaign reluctantly agreed to the rules set by the network.

Still, even with muted microphones, Harris managed to get under Trump’s skin, at one point even prompting him to talk about the size of his campaign rallies.

“People don’t leave my rallies,” he said. “We have the biggest rallies. The most incredible rallies in the history of politics.”
