Donald Trump was fiercely criticized for pumping his fists to “YMCA” as he walked offstage at an anniversary event commemorating victims of the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Video shows the former president clapping his hands and briefly doing a move from his signature dance to the Village People song after speaking to a crowd at his golf resort in Doral, Florida. The song often plays him off the stage at his speaking events.

Critics slammed the music choice and Trump’s post-speech demeanor as inappropriate , disrespectful and “ detached from reality .”

In his speech , Trump said “we will never let the horrors of Oct. 7 be repeated,” and condemned “anti-Jewish hatred,” which he claimed is “within the ranks of the Democrat Party.”

“We will have peace in the Middle East. We will have strength and resilience,” he said to conclude his speech, shortly before the music played. “And we will have a very powerful and strong Israel. And I will be with you all the way. Thank you very much. God bless you and God bless the people of Israel. God bless America.”

A year ago on Monday, Hamas militants killed 1,200 people and kidnapped scores more from Israel in a harrowing attack that led to an ongoing war on neighboring Gaza.

Earlier this year, the Village People sent Trump a cease and desist letter asking him to stop using their music in any personal or campaign capacity. Trump often continues to use artists’ music despite their legal requests that he stop.
