After moving into a pre-war building a few years ago I became very familiar with a common pest problem: ants. No amount of obsessive cleaning or clever maneuvering of my cat’s food bowls were any match for the legions of dedicated ant armies that would find ways inside my bathroom, kitchen and sometimes even my bedroom.

This whole ordeal led me to discover, what I believe, to be truly one of the best ant-eliminating solutions to ever exist (and trust me, I tried everything). Terro liquid ant baits , which are surprisingly affordable and readily available online at most major retailers, have essentially taken ant instinct and turned it against them in order to eliminate any signs of their presence, long-term. Even when nothing else has worked.

The company — as well as the tons of Amazon reviewers who gave the Terro traps 127,260 5-star ratings — attribute the effectiveness of these pre-filled liquid baits to the fact that the design takes advantage of the communal nature of ants. Initially, the ants will become drawn to the syrupy liquid inside and consume it before bringing the active ingredient inside the liquid (borax) back to their colonies. This creates a pheromone trail that attracts more ants, which is why initially you will see an influx of them. But after a few days, the borax has spread to the colonies and even groups of individual ants, to kill them off and prevent them from returning.

After sharing my obsession for these ant baits (you can see my full ant routine in some previous reporting I’ve done), it wasn’t surprising at all to learn that I was amongst other passionate Terro fans, both in the review section of Amazon and in the HuffPost newsroom.

Head of HuffPost Personal, Noah Michelson said he was both mesmerized and horrified by the seemingly unending stream of insects drawn to and hungrily gobbling up the Terro poison before heading back to their home.

“But, I followed the traps’ directions and let them feast. The next morning, the ants were gone and, I kid you not, I. Never. Saw. Another. One. Terro must be made by wizards because it’s nothing short of magic,” Michelson said.

Place the Terro liquid ant baits near any key entry points.

Some reviewers even claim that the colony-eliminating formula worked to help tackle particularly stubborn bouts of infestation, even when professional pest control intervention hadn’t.

One bit of advice I have for future Terro users is that because the liquid in these baits is incredibly sticky, I always place them on top of a folded piece of paper, just in case the liquid drips out of the end. Once the basin has become filled with dead ants and you no longer see a trail of them swarming the trap, you can neatly dispose of it using the paper.

According to directions, the baits can be strategically placed at any point of key ant entry, including windowsills, along baseboards and behind appliances, but I try to always keep mine in areas where I know my cat won’t get to them. Additionally, they are capable of attracting and killing all common household ants.

If you want to see for yourself the magic that only Terro ant traps can provide, or keep them around for the next time you spot an unwanted visitor poking around your home, grab a pack from any of the retailers listed above.

    Promising Amazon reviews:

“I find it sad to have to put out poison to kill the ants in my environment. But when the ants crawled up the two story outdoor walls and came into 4 rooms through the windows I had no choice. Other ant products did nothing. In my neighborhood...about 5 LA cities...when we have high heat in August always the ants show up. I had massive invasion this year but I looked for where they started their trek on the ground and placed these liquid containers. I washed the ants off the walls of the house outdoors also. But this worked. My kitchen overnight was inundated with thousands of ants―-they are a great army....and it took me 3 hours to clean it all up. This stuff works. I couldn’t twist the top off so I held it carefully and used cheap scissors to cut the top off. This stuff is sticky and poisonous so you do not want to get it on you or your counters. So it is a life saver.” — Levanah Shell Bdolak

“If you’re reading this review I think you’ll appreciate my disgust when, upon coming home late one night, I was greeted by dozens of ants swarming over my dog’s dry food bowl. I was going to call an exterminator, but my daughter recommended I try these first. I put a few out where the ants were and waited. In a few hours the dozens of ants became hundreds. As hard as it was to leave them be, that’s exactly what I did. I watched as they busily streamed to and fro from a small opening by my front door. It took a few days, but the numbers slowly diminished and eventually stopped with nary an ant in sight. That was a few years ago. Last month the same thing happened with the little critters coming in from a different area. These worked perfectly the second time around. I highly recommend you try these before signing an expensive contract with an exterminator. ” — mary m

“I pretty much recommend these to anyone with an ant problem. The moment you put these traps near the ants, they go for it! You’ll see a significant increase in ant traffic for about a day or so, but then they’ll be gone!
The liquid inside is thick and sticky, so definitely be careful when cutting off the tab at the end. The liquid can spill out easily, so pay extra attention to holding the trap level while putting it down on whatever surface you’re going to leave it on.
If you have pets, I would definitely cover the trap with something. I usually use a small box- or even the Terro box itself- and cut a small ‘doorway’ type hole for the ants to go through to access the trap. Then I use painters tape to secure the box down on the floor or countertop. I have curious cats and they’ve never been able to get to the traps when I do this.
This is by far the best ant killing product I’ve ever used. ” — TheBjamin

“Just as other reviewers have said, this stuff works really well and really quickly. We have had a bad ant problem all over the house, even in places where there is no food or water and it’s been insane trying to get rid of them. Even our pest control guy has not been able to do it. Finally after reading these reviews I bought this product and seriously, within about 2 days, they were gone. Most of them filled up these little containers and died in there and then the rest just went away. It was awesome! We no longer have an ant problem and I will forever be buying this product! I only wish I had known about this years ago.” — theliterarygirl
