Around midnight on Thursday, June 27, the three cities filed a joint motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Prince George’s County Fire Chief Tiffany Green to prevent them from removing career firefighters from Greenbelt and Berwyn Heights on June 30.

Virginia high school faces recruiting questions after 30 football players transferred this spring
A Virginia high school raised eyebrows internally when 30 new students transferred to the school this spring with the intention of playing on the football team. Hayfield Secondary School (Alexandria, Va.) is now under investigation by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for the net gain of 23 new students at a time when enrollment was dropping countywide, according to the Fairfax County Times. The association does not allow transfer or enrollment of school “made because of athletic ability,” according to its handbook.

Fantasticks to Open Soon in Downtown Silver Spring
According to a report by MoCo360, customizable gelato bar and pop shop Fantasticks will open its second Maryland location in Downtown Silver Spring the weekend of July 13. The new dessert spot will be taking over the space at 915 Ellsworth Dr. that was previously home to Starbucks until the end of March. They currently have a Rio Lakefront location that opened in 2021 and previously had another Maryland location within Manhattan Pizza in Frederick that closed. They also have two Virginia locations at One Loudoun and Clarendon.

It was Independence Day this week, so ALXnow was off yesterday and has a half-day today, but there was a lot of news in the first half of the week. The biggest story was the murder-suicide at the Onelife gym in Carlyle. Charles Hewitt, a D.C. man, allegedly entered the gym and shot and killed Maryland man Joshua Wilcox before shooting himself. Both were transported to a hospital, but died from their injuries.
