The heat has returned for the weekend
The heat and humidity have returned for the weekend, thanks to high pressure skirting off to the east and winds picking up from the south in its wake. Those southerly breezes around 10 to 15 miles per hour are ushering in lots of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico (in addition to moisture transpired from the local corn crops) leading to increased temperatures and dew points.

Des Moines, IA – A mainly dry and warm forecast is in store for today as afternoon highs reach into the mid-80s to low 90s. Slight chance for a few showers and storms in portions of southern Iowa late tonight. The severe weather threat is low, but brief heavy downpours and gusty winds are possible.
New Illinois Law Requires Weather Radios In Certain Homes
It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.
Quiet Overnight, Humidity Builds Through The Weekend
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Decent weather sticks around overnight, but we will be watching for an increase in humidity, warmth, and storm chances by the end of the weekend. Overnight, we get to enjoy mostly clear skies as our low temperatures fall into the 60s. Our eastern counties will cool off a bit more, into the low to mid 60s, while our western counties drop into the mid to upper 60s.
