Hill Fire hits more than 5,000 acres, spurs expanded evacuations
The Hill Fire that is burning a few miles south of Willow Creek expanded to more than 5,200 acres by Saturday and evacuation orders were in effect in multiple zones. “Currently, on the Hill Fire, increased activity in the southern portion of the fire near Mosquito Creek, crews continue to work direct and indirect, as close to the fire’s edge as possible where it’s safe to do so with the intent to hold the fire from progressing further south into Mosquito Creek and hold it at Mosquito Creek,” said Drew Graham in an incident update on Saturday morning that was live-streamed.

It's 6:30 a.m. on July 12 and more than 100 people are lined up below the Carson Mansion on Eureka's First Street, waiting for the Adorni Center to open at 7. Some are bundled in jackets, while others are draped in blankets. Many sit in lawn chairs they'd brought from home, prepared to wait, while others sit on the sidewalk or stand. Some play cards to pass the time, while others read books or stare at their devices, as others chat idly. All are waiting for dental, medical or vision care, most of it long deferred.
Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Identifies Highway 36 Homicide Victim
On 7/14/2024 in the late evening, Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 27000 block of Highway 36 near Bridgeville to investigate the report of a possible shooting. Deputies responded and located one deceased male. Melvin Portillo, age 20 of Sacramento, California, was subsequently arrested for homicide. There are no outstanding suspects or parties, and there is no danger or threat to the public.
