Humboldt JV cruises on gridiron

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s junior varsity football team kicked off the season in fine fashion Tuesday, defeating Erie, 18-2. Erie’s JV was added to the schedule because Humboldt’s original opponent, Leon-Bluestem, remains under quarantine. “We did some good things on both sides of the ball,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said.... Fredonia Continues Search for First Victory

Following a loss to Caney, the Fredonia Yellowjackets will look to get back to even at home against Humboldt in our Game of the Week. The Yellowjackets could not contain the Bullpaps' vaunted running game, falling 49-18. However, head coach Marc Svaty is still confident in his team's chances against the Cubs, who lost to Ava (Mo.) 45-0 last week. Svaty said the Cubs will bring another skilled rushing attack into town. Read more

Fredonia Falls Just Short in Loss to Humboldt

A strong start wasn't enough to land Fredonia in the win column, as the Yellowjackets dropped a close contest to Humboldt, 28-26. Both teams entered the contest looking to pick up their first win of the season, and from the get-go, it seemed Fredonia wanted it more. Running back Colten Dinkel started off the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run up the left sideline midway through the first quarter, and was followed by quarterback Joel Dutton's 1-yarder early in the second. Humboldt would eventually answer, with their own quarterback Gavin Page finding the endzone on a 7-yard carry. However, Fredonia would pick up another touchdown just before the half, a 10-yard scamper from Dinkel that gave the Yellowjackets a 12-point lead at 20-8. Read more

Cubs harriers make their marks

GREENBUSH — Humboldt High’s McKenna Jones has run two cross country races in her high school career — and set a new school record in both. Jones took 11th overall at the Girard Invitational Meet Thursday, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 23 minutes, 19 seconds. She earned a medal for her work, as did teammate Anna Heisler, who finished 25th at 25:08. Read more
