Kids rule too in Best of Whitefish
Eight-year-old Poppy George stood out amongst older folks, placing second in the Best of Whitefish Best Athlete category. George said her mantra is, “I believe in myself. I believe in my team. I believe in God.” George has been a martial arts student at SBG Gym for three years and has a gray/black belt. She also plays soccer with Glacier Surf and her soccer team brought home the gold in their latest home competition, the 3 Blind Refs tournament at the KidSport Complex in Kalispell. The annual tournament is the largest in Montana with over 180 teams coming in from Montana, Idaho, Washington and Canada. Aided by her teammates’ awesome performances, George helped her team score two goals for the win. Among George’s accolades is Mutton Busting Champion, as she competed at the Montana Longhorn Company's Mutton Busting Championship. Beach Boys set to perform next month at Kalispell's Northwest Montana Fair & Rodeo
KALISPELL, Mont. - The Northwest Montana Fair announced Tuesday that the famous Beach Boys will perform at the fair on August 13. "The Beach Boys are one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands of all time, with over 100 million records sold worldwide. Between the 1960s and today, the group had over 80 songs chart worldwide," a release from the fair states.
Locals Seguine and Jacobs win Whitefish Lake Triathlon
The Whitefish Lake Triathlon hosted 165 athletes on Saturday from 13 states and one Canadian province. The annual event returned after being canceled last summer due to wildfire. For the classic sprint event, athletes swam a 1/2 mile in Whitefish Lake starting at City Beach, then biked 12.4 miles up Wisconsin Avenue and East Lakeshore Drive before finishing with a 3.1 mile run.Whitefish locals represented well, taking the top overall male and female spots.Reigning 2022 champion Ryan Seguine, 44, finished first in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 41 seconds. Polson’s Matt Seeley, 53, was just off the winning pace, taking second place with a 1:09:14. Whitefish’s Tony Schiller, 66, placed third at 1:16:28.Overall female winner Carrie Jacobs, 43, of Whitefish, finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 34 seconds. 18-year-old Isabel Seeley of Polson was the first 18-and-under female and the second female overall, crossing the finish at 1:22:42. She was followed by Malia Seeley, 24, in third place.13-year-old Bentley Togo of Lethbridge, Alberta placed first in the male 18 and under division.The top team was Jessica Craig and Wendy Sequine at 1:17:11.Full results are available at competitivetiming.com/wlt/#unique-id-2024. Injured hiker rescued on "M" Trail near Bozeman
BOZEMAN, Mont. - On July 2, 2024, at 8:51 PM Gallatin County 911 Dispatch received a call from a hiker in need of assistance. The hiker had been trail running with a group when they injured their leg. The hiker provided his location indicating he was close to the top of Baldy Mountain. The hiker indicated they were in a group with three other individuals who were assisting them down the mountain.
Supreme Court overturns FERC solar approval after Chevron’s demise
A Montana solar project may be one of the first casualties of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Chevron doctrine. In a short order Tuesday, the justices granted a request to reverse a lower court ruling affirming the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval of the Broadview solar array and battery storage facility in Billings, Montana. The order was one of nine directing federal courts to reconsider decisions on everything from Internal Revenue Service audits to the removal of officials from federal offices, based on Friday’s Chevron ruling.
Veterans retreat expands near Thompson Falls
On a peaceful mountain retreat in Thompson Falls, close to 100 people gathered recently to celebrate the acquisition of a new 60-acre facility for a veterans group called, Patrol Base Abbate Return to Base.Located on Tanager Road, this off-grid mountain base above the Clark Fork River exists as a place for veterans from all branches to rest, reconnect with other fellow military personnel, and rediscover the meaning of service to themselves, families and communities.
