There's a new stretch of greenway in Huntersville

A new section of Torrence Creek Greenway is now open in Huntersville.

Why it matters: Mecklenburg County is in the midst of a massive year for greenway construction. Greenways provide residents with more access to outdoor public space and alternatives to congested streets.

State of play: The new stretch of Torrence Creek Greenway spans roughly 0.9 miles, bringing the greenway to approximately 3 miles. The county worked with the Town of Huntersville on the project.

• It connects the Huntersville Gateway Park and Ride at Compass Street to Rosewood Meadow Lane. It also links the greenway to the Carolina Thread Trail .
• Plus it incorporates a tunnel under I-77 completed by NCDOT.
• Greenway users may park at the park and ride lot, the county confirmed.
• You'll notice public art as you walk through the tunnel by Adam Buente, founder and owner of Project One Studio. Buente's work is called "State of Flow." The name refers to the flow not only of water, but also the "mental flow state achieved during exercise, activities on the trail, or appreciating the area's natural beauty," the artist said in an Instagram post .

By the numbers: The new section of the greenway cost $5.6 million, per the county.

• It has two bridges, five neighbors connections (including one to Rosedale Nature Park) and a boardwalk system spans roughly 2,700 feet total.

What's next: The greenway will eventually connect to the McDowell Creek Greenway and The Vine , Huntersville's downtown greenway.

• The county will hold an official ribbon cutting on Monday, July 15 at 6pm at 10300 Compass St. Huntersville, N.C.
