Search efforts continue for teen swimmer in Huntington Beach 00:57

A search is underway off the coast of Huntington Beach for a 15-year-old who went swimming and never returned to shore Sunday evening.

"We are currently searching from the Huntington Beach Pier to the Santa Ana River," said Frank Lower with the U.S. Coast Guard during a press conference Monday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard said they have units both in the water and in the air actively searching for the missing teen.

"The Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin is actively searching the water as well as assets from our small boat station and air station," said Lower.

Orange County Sheriff's Department first responded around 9 p.m. after two teens reportedly went swimming and one did not make it back to shore, according to the Huntington Beach's public affairs manager.

The divers stopped their search in the water around 10:40 p.m., but the search continued around the beach area and in the air. Crews went back out in the water Monday morning.

The teen went swimming near Lifeguard Tower 11, which is between Twin Dolphin and Huntington streets, where strong rip currents were reported earlier in the day.

The U.S. Coast Guard is working with the Huntington Beach Fire Department, Huntington Beach Police Department, Huntington Beach lifeguards and OC Fire Authority on searching the area.

The search is active and ongoing as of 11:45 a.m. on Monday.
