Huntington supervisor Ed Smyth and local officials led a briefing  Tuesday introducing increased maritime safety measures throughout the Fourth of July weekend because of increased boating traffic around the fourth of July.

The town will be implementing temporary 5 mile per hour zones from 8:30 to 11 pm on Thursday south of Eaton’s Neck Target Rock Line and inside Huntington Bay.

“We expect over 1, 200 boats to enjoy the 4th of July celebration, but with this comes the risk of overcrowding,” Smyth said.

The Suffolk County’s Safer Waterways act requires boat operators to take a safety course and have a certificate displayed on board of their vessel at all times. Safety courses are available through the Victoria Gaines Boating and Safety Program and are presented by Neptune Sail and Power. The next dates for the state mandated American Boating Course will be on Sept. 9 and  Sept.16. Sgt.t Mike Gorey emphasized that there will be an increased marine patrol presence monitoring for violators.

Senior harbor master, Fred Uvena urged boaters near fireworks to watch out for fallout. Burning embers can significantly damage canvas sails or gel coats on fiberglass boats.

Gina Lieneck, whose daughter was killed in a 2005 boating accident in the Great South Bay, spoke about the importance of staying sober and alert at the wheel. “ We all like to have a good time during the holidays, but be responsible. Think of the lives around you and don’t let this holiday end in a tragedy.”

In 2019, she helped pass Brianna’s Law, named after her late daughter, which set standards for boating education. She implored the audience to support an upcoming BWI bill she is promoting in the New York state assembly. While it has been passed in the State Senate three times, it has yet to be voted through by the state assembly.

There will be eight boating emergency pickup locations:
