Huntington’s Summer in the Streets festival returned for its second year on Sunday with a sprawling art market, a pineapple themed food competition and live bands.

Chalk illustrations of local company logos and artists covered the road surrounding the art market while four local bands, Johnny Kingdom, Ape Theory, Dock Holiday, Kyla Silk and Fat Nicky & The Snacks, gathered sizable crowds. Local artists sold a wide variety of products,  from temporary tattoos to dog accessories to jewelry made from spoons.

Walking around the town, one could spot adults dashing from restaurant to restaurant as if they were in a scavenger hunt. For Huntington’s first ever culinary contest, restaurants were asked to create a dish featuring pineapple that visitors could vote on.

Shout-out dishes included a marinated steak and pineapple skewers from Sur Argentinian Steakhouse and a “Surfer Boy Panini” designed by the owner’s son from New York Panini. The Surfer Boy Panini smartly balanced the richness of mozzarella and grilled chicken with pineapple and a spicy sauce. Ben & Jerry’s played fast and loose with how much pineapple was in their pineapple ice cream float by only including pineapple Fanta with a mango ice cream base.

Shipment delays and miscommunications left Ella’s and Krave It  unable to serve their competition dishes. “We normally contact the managers or the owners to coordinate, so it appears there was a miscommunication at a more local level,” said Kelly Smith from the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.
