    Schools: Supply Drives, New Leaders at Huntington, South Huntington

    Numerous organizations are collecting school supplies for students. Here are a few:

    The office of Assemblyman Steve Stern is collecting supplies for the Scott Martella Supply Our Students Drive 2024, now through Wednesday, Monday-Friday, 10:00AM-4:00PM. The office is located at 95 Broad Hollow Road, Suite 100, Melville.

    Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin is collecting school supplies for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in support of the 2024 Scott Martella Supply our Students Drive.  Drop off supplies in the donation box in her district office, located at 6080 Jericho Turnpike, Suite 307 Commack, by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Tri-CYA is collecting through Aug. 9, with a bin in its offices at 809 New York Ave.  Items to donate include pens, pencils, crayons, markers, spiral and marble notebooks, binders, looseleaf paper, backpacks and more.
    New Deputy Superintendent

    Edwin (Eddie) Smith is the new deputy superintendent for the South Huntington School District.  He will also continue as assistant superintendent for human resources.  Smith first came to South Huntington in 2008 as administrative dean for Stimson Middle School.  After leaving to serve as assistant principal at Merrick Avenue Middle School, he returned to South Huntington in 2013 as principal at Stimson.  He’s been with the district since then, leaving Stimson in 2022 to move to the district offices as executive director of personnel.  He became Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in July 2023.

    He received his B.A. from SUNY New Paltz in Secondary Education Social Studies, and his Masters in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Social Studies Education from SUNY Stony Brook.  In 2008, he was awarded his Professional Diploma in Educational Leadership and Administration from Long Island University.  He has his New York State School District Administrator Certification and Social Studies 7-12 Permanent Certification.

    New Fine Arts Director

    Kimberly Musial as district director of fine and performing arts effective July 10.

    Musial obtained a BM degree in viola performance at the University of Houston in 2002 and went on to engage in graduate studies at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She earned an MS degree in arts administration at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia in 2006.

    She holds an advanced certificate in music education from CUNY Queens College and an advanced certificate in educational administration from St. John’s University. She completed the emergency medical technician-paramedic program at Stony Brook University in 2020.

    She previously was director of orchestras in Levittown, a position she also previously held in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. She was chairperson of music at
    Woodland Middle School in East Meadow and was director of orchestras and an instructor of
    interdisciplinary arts at the Portledge School in Locust Valley. She also worked as a leave replacement orchestra teacher in Levittown.

    Northport School Board

    Carol Taylor was unanimously elected as the new BOE president and Larry Licopoli, who previously served as president, was elected vice president. The newly elected trustee Michael Cleary was sworn in.
