    Schools: Principal, Music Director Appointed

    School districts within the Town of Huntington continue to augment their leadership ranks, making appointments to a variety of administrative and educational positions.

    Maria Colon is moving to a new role in the South Huntington School District as the principal of Maplewood Intermediate School.  She taught there for 24 years before leaving in 2019 to become the assistant principal at Oakwood Primary Center.

    She moved into the principal’s office at Maplewood on July 1. The position was vacated by Dr. William Hender who left for the district offices to become assistant superintendent for Elementary Education.

    Colon received her Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY New Paltz with a major in Elementary Education, Grades Nursery to six.  Six years later she was awarded a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University.  She stayed with Stony Brook University for her Advanced Graduate Certificate, and School District Leader and School Building Administration certificates.

    After spending a year teaching in Poughkeepsie, she returned to Long Island and the South Huntington School District.

    Music Chair Appointed
    James Guarini has been named the new K-12 music department chairperson in the Cold Spring Harbor district.

    He succeeds Brent Chiarello, who has been named the Director of Fine & Performing Arts at Bethpage School District.

    He began his studies of Musicianship and Business at Fordham University, received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Queens College and his Masters from Five Towns College in Music Technology. Starting in 2006, he began his teaching career at Glen Cove School District where he has remained until 2024. He loves taking the stage with jazz, blues, and rock ensembles performing in benefit concerts both internationally and across Long Island, as well as classical ensemble performances at Carnegie Hall.

    Science Awards in Northport

    Three Northport-East Northport Union Free School District students received top honors at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Science Fair earlier this month where they showcased their  science projects.

    Earning first place were Ocean Avenue Elementary School student Eden Campbell, Ocean Avenue Elementary School student Milan Patel and Northport Middle School student Luke Dinsman.

    Zoe Wood from Northport Middle School and Charlotte Sheahan from Pulaski Road Elementary School earned Judges Choice awards, and Matthew Ingram from Ocean Avenue Elementary School and Gabriel Affatato from Pulaski Road Elementary School earned honorable mentions.
