The Town of Huntington is on a mission to reduce trash and the environmental hazards caused by balloons.

Councilman Sal Ferro said that the town’s Pop-and-Drop campaign, partnering with Balloon Mission, includes dropboxes where deflated balloons can be deposited. The organization repurposes the content of the balloons.

Animals often try to eat deflated balloons, or they pollute the environment, ending up in waterways. Strings and ribbons are frequently attached to balloons and can wrap around marine animals, causing them to become entangled. And the plastic used in balloons is not biodegradable.

They also can be a hazard to electrical lines; PSEG-LI frequently warns about the problems caused by mylar balloons, which can cause power outages if they hit electric lines.

The Town of Huntington Senior Center, the South Huntington Library and the Commack Library, among other sites, have deposit boxes to collect deflated balloons.
