HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — A man who ran in the Huntington mayoral primary election was arrested for threatening to kill current Mayor and West Virginia gubernatorial candidate Steve Williams, according to a criminal complaint.

The criminal complaint said Richard Luther, 70, went to City Hall and told security officers he was going to kill the mayor. He then said Mayor Steve Williams threatened to kill him.

Luther was allowed to go to the payment office and told a worker that Williams and his brother-in-law “are with the mafia,” the criminal complaint said. He then said he would “get [Williams] before he could get me.”

Another employee said Luther told them to attend the next City Council meeting and bring cameras “because it is going to be very interesting,” according to the complaint.

After leaving the payment office, he said to officers, “He threatened to kill me, but I am an actual killer. You don’t even know the ones I’ve killed.” He also said, “You look at me like I’m bulls—ing. I am going to kill him,” according to the criminal complaint.

Luther was being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 cash-only bond, according to the West Virginia Division of Corrections & Rehabilitation. Court documents show Luther has posted bond and is out of jail.

According to court documents regarding his bond, Luther cannot have contact with Mayor Williams and cannot be in or around City Hall in Huntington.

He is due back in court on Monday at 10:30 a.m.
