HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — A memorial that has stood tall at Marshall University for decades is now being recognized as a historic place.

The National Park Service’s (NPR) National Register of Historic Places catalogues places of historic and archeological significance throughout America, and the Marshall University Memorial Fountain is the latest to join its list .

Nominated for the registry by the West Virginia Archives and History Commission back in June , the fountain was built in 1972 by artist Harry Bertoia as a memorial to the 75 lives lost in the 1970 Marshall plane crash.

Huntington’s 14th Street West Historic District — which roughly covers Madison Avenue, Virginia Avenue, 15th Street West and 13th Street West — was also added to the registry list.
