HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK)– The Huntington Children’s Museum is officially open after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday.

The idea for the museum came from Tosha Pelfrey, who noticed grassroots children’s museums opening across Appalachia. After speaking with organizers of other museums, Pelfrey and her husband decided this was something they could do.

Over the following three years, Pelfrey amassed a board and gained community support through donations and volunteers.

And now, the Huntington community has a children’s museum of their very own.

The facility emphasizes child development through play. It includes features such as an interactive water table, an interactive sand table, an indoor climbing area, and even their own kid-sized city.

The museum is already working on new exhibits. And during the ribbon cutting, the City of Huntington presented a $20,000 check, which the museum plans to use to create a grocery store inside the kid-sized city.

The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. For more information on the museum, click here.
