Students in a science enrichment program at Walt Whitman High School visited a privately owned reef tank in Old Westbury recently.

The custom-built tank holds 17,000 gallons of water and measures 16x15x9 feet, and includes live coral and specific species of fish to mimic the natural environment of a coral reef in the ocean.

Owned by Andrew Sandler, the Polo Reef’s “Wall of water” is a way for him to relax away from the stresses of work on Wall Street. He has opened up his home to reef hobbyists and science students, hoping to inspire them.

“I particularly like when a school or schools have curriculum for either aquarium science and marine biology to have the kids here to inspire them, to see what can be done, to learn, and to make sure the hobby grows. I think it sparks a whole bunch of things in their brain,” said Sandler.

    Origami at Work

Two Half Hollow HIlls West students have created a program to bring students and senior citizens together.

Riddhi Das and Arjun Airen created Paper Parcels to teach students how to make origami art and provide the creations to people living at Sunrise Senior Living community in Dix Hills.

“I knew this idea would have many positive impacts on my community,” Riddhi said. “I worked so hard to turn this dream into a reality because of my grandmother. Every time I gave her little gifts I saw how happy she got. I wanted to try and spread this joy to all of the seniors in our community. Thus, I wanted the mission of Paper Parcels to be focused on teaching the youngest learners the importance of giving back to their community in a fun and interactive way while also making sure our seniors felt loved and valued throughout the entire year.”

The organization hosted five workshops during the 2023-2024 school year. During these workshops, the children made origami fish, snowmen, ghosts, Valentine’s envelopes, and St. Patrick’s Day shamrocks. All together, this organization has delivered over 130 pieces of origami and 100 personalized cards to the seniors at Sunrise Senior Living.

The organization is working on expanding to all of the elementary schools and middle schools in the Half Hollow
    Hills school district.
