The Coltrane Home in Dix Hills will sponsor A Force for Good Day on Saturday with student musicians providing a free concert.

The day, at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills, will include a giveaway of school supplies. It runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“In the spirit of Alice and John, we will give back to our community and share resources from local organizations –  our partners in this day of giving. We will also present a series of performances by young student musicians,” according to a statement from the Coltrane Home.

The event honors the legacy of pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane in the “Year of Alice” campaign, and John Coltrane ahead of what would have been his 98th birthday on Sept. 27.

Students are invited to drop by after 1 p.m. for free books and school supplies. Visitors can also walk through the downstairs lobby and meet representatives from The Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. The Huntington Youth Bureau will be on site to explain services available for students.

John Coltrane, a saxophonist, was a leading force in American jazz, whose work often showed a spiritual dimension. He died in 1967 at age 40.

    School Leases

The Northport school board has authorized leases for two of the buildings it had listed for sale or lease.

Variety Child Learning Center will take on a lease for Bellerose Avenue Elementary School in July 2025; Western Suffolk BOCES is leasing  a portion of Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, for its elementary applied behavior analysis program.

As Northport’s school population declined, the school board moved to sell or lease those two buildings , as well as the William J. Brosnan building. It is no longer on the market. The attempt to sell the buildings encountered fierce opposition from some in the community.

    New Job for Polansky

Jim Polansky, retired superintendent of the Huntington school district, and award-winning former principal of Walt Whitman High School, will return to the South Huntington district on a part-time contract.

The South Huntington board recently approved a $30,000 contract for Polansky to work as a mentor with new administrators.

Polansky was an assistant superintendent for personnel and district services in the district when he was named superintendent in Huntington in 2011; he retired last year. While principal at Whitman, he was named the state’s principal of the year in 2010.
